Plan Selection
How to Evaluate your Medicare Options
Selecting Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage, and Prescription Drug Plans
In order to best meet customer expectations, we have developed the three-step process described below.
Each step is a natural progression from the step before, thereby providing you a simple and transparent process in evaluating your Medicare options.
Step 1: Review Your Medicare Options
In the first step we will discuss Medicare choices available to you – whether you are new to Medicare or changing your Medicare plan. During this phase we will analyze and discuss numerous critical questions. Some of these include:
- Whether to enroll into Part B or postpone it?
- Whether to stay with Original Medicare or to switch to one of the Advantage plans?
- Whether to sign up for a Medicare Part D Plan?
- Whether to sign up for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?
To proceed, review our "ABC's & Part D of Medicare" workshop hand-out, then determine which of the following applies to your situation:
- New to Medicare- If your are within your 7 month "Initial Open Enrollment Period," then all options of enrollment are available to you. The 7 month IOEP begins 3 months prior to the month your Medicare becomes effective, plus the effective month, and ends 3 months after the effective month of your Medicare start month.
- Changing Medicare Plans- Although a Medicare supplement plan may be changed through out the year, changes to & from "Original Medicare," "Medicare Advantage plans," and "Part D Prescription plans" must be done during the Annual "Open Election Period" (Oct. 25th - Dec. 7th) each year, unless a SEP-Special Enrollment Period exists. (See page 7 of the "ABCs & Part D of Medicare" report to see which SEP may apply.)
Step 2: Make a Medicare Plan Selection
Once you've completed Step 1 and made your Medicare choice, we will suggest one or more specific plans that best correspond to your needs. We will pay particular attention to many of your issues in order to get you the best coverage at the lowest price.
To proceed, choose the Medicare option(s) that you decided upon in Step 1:
Step 3: Enroll into Medicare Plan
Once you have completed Step 2 and chosen a specific Medicare plan, we will help guide you through the enrollment process. For selected carriers, you may complete the process yourself by reviewing the plans and enrolling in the Medicare plan of your choice.
It is important you understand how Medicare works. At any step in the process we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the basics. Accordingly, we have prepared a comprehensive review to educate you about Medicare basics.
